Musings: Speaking of the 80’s…This is England

“This is England,” directed by Shane Meadows, is one my my favorite Sundance films. It tells the story of a young boy who falls into the hands of a group of “Skinheads” who show him a less naive way of life. Aside from the incredible story line, the fashion component of this movie is absolutely amazing. This film truly describes Eighties Fashion. When it comes to fashion, I am a huge Eighties fan, because most of the looks that were created sprung out of various rebellion movements, and have continued as repeated trends today. From Madonna “Glam” to “Eighties Punk” and “Skinhead,” designers such as Betsey Johnson and Ben Sherman created international trademarks for fashion and style. Personally, I think that the Eighties led to a reevaluation of what was “cool,” as perceived by the youth culture. If you haven’t seen this film, you should check it out.
