In the 1980s, confidence in consumerism, self-worth, politics and pop culture was at a peak. We felt good and the kitschy music and entertainment upheld that feeling. After a decade of two wars, terrorist attacks, a slumped economy, and other maladies, the 2000 decade has left most of the world feeling deflated, depressed and exhausted.
Inspired by the dry river bed that I refer to as the music industry, I have recently recycled songs and movies that I watched during the 80s that reignite feelings of ebullience, heroism, playfulness and intellectual stimuli—all that, combined, has amounted to my cerebral valley girl’ness, as my friend Constance refers to me.
I invite you all to create your own grid that will inspire us to indulge in pop culture once again for its ability to feed us energy and feel good moments that then yield a certain lightness of being, per se.
